Back to School Blues

I don't know about you, but I was really excited that the summer was finally over! The kids are back in school! I've got my apartment back. I've got my sanity back! .... at least until 3:00pm! Then my peace and quiet is over until 10:00pm.

Between homework, housework, dinner, showers, and reading - I feel liked I've been hijacked! Not to mention PTA meetings, gymnastics, chess club, garden club, running club ....... I'm about to Club Myself!! What was I thinking??? Why was I bemoaning the long summer days? I think the heat gave me 'selective memory'!

School is hard! And I don't just mean getting your kids to do their homework! Getting up early - hard! Getting everyone fed and dressed - really hard! Getting everyone out of the house on time - really, really hard! Getting your kids to brush their teeth - really, really, really hard! Keeping your cool and sense of humor throughout - REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HARD!!!

So ... if you see me crying over my cup of 'Joe' - don't worry! It's just the 'Back to School Blues'!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Birthdays .... They come every year. One day you're holding your baby in your arms and the next day they're turning 11yrs. old - as mine are about to this month.

Where did the time go? How did my baby get to be taller than me?! How could this happen without my permission ???

I know we've all heard the saying - "Enjoy it while you can" - because they won't be little forever. And ... in the middle of 4am feedings and diaper-changes it's easy to wish they were grown up already.

Well, as the mother of soon-to-be 11yr. old twins, I can definately relate. I don't know where the years went so fast! So, I am constantly reminding myself of this expression as I 'wish they would grow up already' when I'm in the middle of a homework 'battle', bedtime 'argument' or having to drive them to any number of after-school activities.

And, I am sooo grateful that my son still wants to hold my hand and kiss me. That my daughter hugs me and wants to do 'girl-stuff' together! I now wish they would STOP growing! I want to treasure this time with them and I want it to last longer than it will.

So, the next time you're in the middle of a 'battle' with your kids over 'Whatever', remind yourself that 'This too shall pass - all TOO SOON!

LABOR DAY CELEBRATION

“Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day. It would have been called Independence Day, but that name was already taken.” ~Bill Dodds

He Loves Me - He Love Me Not

Oh, to be back in elementary school around Valentine’s Day! All those cards and gifts that get exchanged; all that love going around. Think about it; all Unconditional, all Love, to ALL! There’s no discerning between your classmates, no judgments, no decisions. Everyone gets your love! The little girl with the red hair, the boy in the back that always picks his nose and even the bully on the playground. For this one day everyone is loved (or, at least gets a ‘love card’)!

Can you imagine what life would be like if everyday was like Valentines Day? Every day Unconditional Love’. Every day seeing only the Good in everyone? (Including your little sister?)

How do we teach our children to love everyone and treat each other this way every day? As parents, we teach our children kindness, compassion, respect and how to get along with others. As Spiritual parents it is also our role to teach them to see the ‘God-Goodness’ in everyone. Whether that kid in school is a ‘jock’, a ‘brain’, popular or not; no matter what their skin color, ethnicity, height, weight, hair color, or type of backpack they carry – EVERYONE is an expression of God. We’re all Special, we’re all Unique, and we’re all connected because we’re all the same inside.

Kids really connect with this principle when we show them unconditional love and appreciation for who they are because children raised in love and support, go out in the world loving and supporting others.

So, let’s make every day Valentines Day starting NOW. Open your heart to the children of the world - including Yourself - and S.W.A.K.!

Holiday Wish List

If your household is anthing like mine, you've been subject to the 'Wish List' from your kids. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza or just 'good grades', if you've got kids, you've got 'wants'!

This year, in particular, will be a little 'light' under the tree and I'm afraid Hanukah celebrations may be consolidated down to One Night instead of the usual eight! Being a multi-religious family we get to celebrate two 'gift-giving' holidays every year! Although, spiritually we follow a different path. Holidays, for me anyway, are about celebrating our history & traditions ( and food)!

In these hard economic times it becomes even more clear what the true meaning of the holidays should be all about. And, it's not about getting everything on your wish list --- unless your list includes unlimited and unconditional love and kisses! Those I have an unlimited supply of!!!
So, what is YOUR WISH LIST this year? Post Your Reply! Here's just a sample of some of mine:

1. Unconditional love from my friends and family
2. Smiles, Hugs and Kisses (including from my dog & cat)
3. A full stomach & refrigerator for EVERYONE
4. JOY, FUN, HARMONY & TICKLES
5. Trust & Complete Faith in a Universal Intelligence that always says YES
6. Being the Best Parent I can Be!
